In Module 3 of the coaching program I’m on I get to create a timeline. This documents all the negative and positive events and milestones from age zero to now (50). These events become journal fodder for uncovering values, decision making strategies, and beliefs. It has been intense.
I’ve unearthed patterns of relating that allowed me to see how I put people on pedestals. This, it turned out, was because I wanted to be infantilised and cared for, rather than embrace my own sovereignty. It was rather uncomfortable, as I’m sure you can imagine, to see this pattern and accept it before releasing it. I then went on to embrace my sovereignty and accept myself as equal to everyone else.
This process has been worth the discomfort. It’s much better to be aware of the things lurking in your subconscious than allow them to run the show. More awareness equals more choice. I love this quote from Glennon Doyle’s book, Untamed:
We can do hard thingsGlennon Doyle
We can and we will and they will empower us. I am here for you to do your hard things.
